World AIDS Day 2023: 35th Year in the Fight Against HIV

HEALTH Last Updated: December 01, 2023, 09:45 AM IST. World AIDS Day 2023: 35th Year in the Fight Against HIV On December 1, the world commemorates the 35th World AIDS Day, a crucial occasion first recognized in 1988. This day is set aside to raise awareness about the AIDS pandemic caused by HIV, remember those lost to the disease, and address the ongoing global health challenge. Since 1981, approximately 40 million lives have been lost to AIDS, and today, around 37 million people are living with HIV. Despite advancements in treatment, the epidemic still claims around two million lives annually, including over 250,000 children. The theme for World AIDS Day this year, “World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit,” underscores the need to continue the fight against HIV-related stigma, honor the lives lost, and pledge ongoing commitment to eradicating HIV as a public health threat. This day has evolved over 35 years, with significant progress in medical research, treatment access, and understanding of the virus. Surprisingly, many are unaware of certain facts about AIDS: HIV traces its origins to chimpanzees and monkeys. It’s possible to be symptom-free for years after infection. In the U.S., one in five people living with HIV are unaware of their status. HIV disproportionately affects minority groups, impacted by education gaps, poverty, and stigma. Globally, 3.3 million children were living with HIV by the end of 2011. It’s the leading cause of death among women of reproductive age worldwide. The focus since 2012 has been on achieving zero new infections, zero AIDS-related deaths, and zero discrimination. However, infection rates among young women remain disproportionately high. Addressing unequal access to treatment, especially among marginalized groups, is crucial. Currently, less than half of those with HIV/AIDS globally have access to necessary treatment. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle against HIV/AIDS and the need for global solidarity and action to overcome this health challenge. Rising Concern: Zika Virus Cases Escalate in Maharashtra

HEALTH Last Updated: November 17, 2023, 08:05 PM IST. Rising Concern Zika Virus Cases Escalate in Maharashtra The Zika virus, a mosquito-borne illness, has been increasingly detected in Maharashtra. Recently, a 64-year-old woman in Pune was diagnosed with the virus, characterized by symptoms such as fever, body aches, rashes, and joint pain. Zika virus is known for causing mild diseases in most individuals. However, it poses a significant threat to pregnant women, potentially affecting the brain development of the fetus. The Current Situation in Maharashtra: Maharashtra is currently facing a surge in Zika virus infections. The latest case from Pune marks the seventh in the state. This rise in cases has prompted heightened surveillance and preventive measures, especially in areas neighboring Karnataka, where similar increases have been observed. Public health authorities are particularly focused on monitoring pregnant women within a 5km radius of detected cases, continuing post-delivery follow-ups due to the risks of congenital Zika syndrome. Zika Virus – A Brief Overview: First identified in Uganda in 1947 in a Rhesus macaque monkey, the Zika virus is primarily transmitted through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes. Symptoms are similar to those of dengue, including rash, fever, conjunctivitis, muscle and joint pain, malaise, and headache, typically lasting 2–7 days. However, most infected people do not develop noticeable symptoms. Implications for Pregnant Women: For pregnant women, the stakes are higher. There’s an increased risk of miscarriage and serious birth defects if a pregnant woman contracts the Zika virus. Thus, precautionary measures are intensely advised for this demographic. Public health experts emphasize that while there is no specific treatment for Zika, managing symptoms with sufficient rest and hydration is crucial to recovery. Preventive Actions and Public Health Measures: In light of these developments, the health department has intensified surveillance efforts, particularly in Pune and Bengaluru. Public health measures include increased monitoring of potential breeding sites for Aedes mosquitoes and widespread public awareness campaigns. While no specific treatment exists for Zika, the public is advised to take preventive actions against mosquito bites and seek medical attention if symptoms arise.   Latest News Health Rising Concern: Zika Virus Cases Escalate in Maharashtra November 17, 2023 // Health // Entertainment Streaming Now: Ravi Teja’s ‘Tiger Nageswara Rao’ Drops Early on OTT November 17, 2023 // Entertainment // Business RBI’s New Twist in Personal Loan Policies: Higher Costs Ahead?
